Brachioplasty
Brachioplasty is an elective cosmetic surgery procedure performed to remove excess flabby or baggy skin from the upper arms. Brachioplasty can be a beneficial procedure for people who are unhappy with the appearance of their upper arms due to aging, genetics, or significant weight loss. With aging, the skin of the upper
arms can become loose because of the reduced muscle tone and bone density that comes with age. People who have lost a great deal of weight may also have this excess skin in the upper arms, because the original, extra weight caused the skin to stretch.
General Procedure
Brachioplasty cosmetic surgery is an outpatient procedure that is done under a general anesthetic. The average brachioplasty procedure takes two hours plus time for anesthesia and initial recovery time.During the brachioplasty procedure the surgeon will make zigzag incisions in the skin of the upper arm to excise the excess skin and fat from the area. The skin is then stretched and stitched together. The average time of healing and recovery from brachioplasty surgery is two to six weeks during which time your surgeon may recommend the use of compression garments and may prescribe pain medications.
After Surgery
Depending on the technique used during the surgery, drains and/or stitches may need to be removed in the first week or two of recovery. Many patients are able to return to work one to two weeks after their brachioplasty surgery. Brachioplasty surgery can also be performed in conjunction with a liposuction procedure if the patient and the surgeon have determined that dual surgical procedures are optional.
Because of the level of the incisions, visible scars can be a major concern. It becomes a choice between the loose wobbling extra skin and the scar from the excision. Meticulous surgical technique and after surgery scar care can limit the degree of scarring. Clothing style can help camouflage some of the scar, but not the loose skin before surgery.
During the initial consultation, you and your surgeon will discuss the changes you want to make in your appearance. He/she will explain the different options available to you, the procedure itself, and its risks and limitations. He/she will also explain the kind of anesthesia required, surgical facility, and costs.Brachioplasty results are long-lasting and can produce dramatic improvement in the firmness and appearance of the upper arms.
